National Children’s Dental Health Month

Adult and Pediatric Dental Operatories

Children’s teeth are meant to last a lifetime, and a healthy smile is important to a child’s self-esteem. With proper care, a balanced diet and regular dental visits, their teeth can remain healthy and strong.

The American Dental Association recommends that children receive regular dental check-ups, including a visit to the dentist within six months of the eruption of the first tooth, and no later than the child’s first birthday. Routine dental examinations reveal problems that can be easily treated in the early stages when damage is minimal. Sealants are used to protect the chewing surfaces from tooth decay, the single most common chronic childhood disease. Sealants help prevent or reduce the incidence of decay in teeth. A sealant is a clear or tooth-colored plastic material that is applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where decay occurs most often. Sealants protect normal depressions and grooves in the teeth called pits and fissures, which are particularly susceptible to tooth decay.

Poor Dental Health Can Lead to Lifetime of Barriers

A child with advanced cavities often will do poorly in school and not receive proper nourishment due to tooth pain, as well. Thus, creating a lifetime of barriers for the child to reach their full potential. Dental decay is the most prevalent dental issue in children worldwide and also the most preventable. Educating the entire family on the importance of good oral health habits early in life including tooth decay prevention, diet, tooth brushing & flossing, scheduling regular check-ups w/ dental cleanings and/or fillings for those children with advanced cavities.
